Det 3 B 935th ASB: Modern Knights Protecting Our Country
The Challenge: Creating a Logo Worn in Combat
The 35th Combat Aviation Brigade deploys to an area of responsibility to provide command, control, staff planning and supervision of combat aviation brigade operations.
When Detachment 3 B Aviation Support Battalion wanted a kick ass logo and patch design for their unit, they came to Spellbrand. The brigade’s units fly a combination of AH-64A Apache attack helicopters, OH-58 Kiowa observation helicopters and UH-60 Blackhawk utility helicopters. It also has a detachment of two C-23 Sherpa cargo airplanes and a C-12 transport airplane.
This challenge requires:
- Combat responsibility: Logo worn by brave men and women in combat
- Huge responsibility: Huge responsibility not taken lightly
- Apache helicopter: Apache helicopter icon as central point
- Modern knights: Men and women as modern knights
- Shield shape: Shield shape common to military patches

Brand Strategy: Special Task Force for Combat Responsibility
Working with the US Army and creating a logo design that would be worn by these brave men and women in combat was a huge responsibility that we did not take lightly. We created a special task force at Spellbrand to work on this project headed by Brand Strategist, Mash Bonigala who already had some experience working with the US Army and the FBI (US Marshals). We spent over a week interviewing the client, researching, brainstorming and sketching before we came up with the initial designs that blew the client away.
This brand strategy works because:
- Huge responsibility: Logo worn by brave men and women in combat
- Special task force: Created special task force for project
- Experience: Brand Strategist with US Army and FBI experience
- Thorough process: Over a week interviewing, researching, brainstorming, sketching
- Client approval: Initial designs blew client away
Logo Design: Apache Helicopter and Medieval Knight Helmet
Each of the designs focused on the Apache helicopter icon as the central point. The winning design had a medieval knight’s helmet to indicate that the men and women of the 935th ASB unit were modern knights helping protect our country. We used a shield like shape that is common to most military patches with the words D3B and 935th ASB on top and bottom.
This logo design works because:
- Apache helicopter: Apache helicopter icon as central point
- Medieval knight helmet: Medieval knight’s helmet indicates modern knights
- Modern knights: Men and women as modern knights protecting country
- Shield shape: Shield shape common to military patches
- Unit identification: D3B and 935th ASB on top and bottom
- Combat ready: Design suitable for combat wear
Results: A Patch Design That Honors Modern Knights
The brand identity and patch design we created for Det 3 B 935th ASB successfully honors the brave men and women who wear it in combat, creating a logo design with Apache helicopter icon as central point and medieval knight’s helmet indicating they are modern knights helping protect our country. The shield shape design with D3B and 935th ASB identification, created through special task force with thorough process of interviewing, researching, brainstorming and sketching, positions them as a unit that deploys to provide command, control, staff planning and supervision of combat aviation brigade operations.
Today, Det 3 B 935th ASB uses this patch design to identify their unit, positioning them as part of 35th Combat Aviation Brigade that flies combination of AH-64A Apache attack helicopters, OH-58 Kiowa observation helicopters and UH-60 Blackhawk utility helicopters, with detachment of C-23 Sherpa cargo airplanes and C-12 transport airplane, with logo design worn by brave men and women in combat as modern knights protecting our country.
