Wikia Website Review

By Eva Alsis

What exactly is a wiki? Although the word itself is Hawaiian for ‘fast’, it now means a website that enables fast and easy creation of interlinked web pages. This definition comes from Wikipedia, perhaps the best known purveyor of the medium. Wikia aims to give Wikipedia and other wiki websites a run for their money with a focus on pop culture and other popular topics.

Website Reviewed:

Wikia is not just a well-designed CSS website, although it certainly is that. It makes it easy to get information and to share information on a variety of topics without all the rules and seriousness of Wikipedia. The focus on pop culture and entertainment is obvious from the tabs at the top of the home page (and every other page as well), which divide webpages into the categories of Entertainment, Gaming, and Lifestyle. No yawn-inducing history lessons here, my friends. This wiki site is all about things that might actually interest you.

Not only are the subjects interesting, they are easy to access thanks to the sensible, WYSIWYG design. You can see from the time you enter the home page exactly what the site has to offer and how to find it. Further, if you are the creative type you can build a page easily thanks to the huge blue ‘Start a wiki now’ button. Everything on this website is easy and fast, staying true to the origins of the term.

Creativity: 3 stars. This may be the one aspect where the site falls a little short. The blue and white coloring is perfect because they allow the focus to remain on the scrolling images and the more useful aspects of the website. However, there is nothing about this website that makes you say ‘Wow’. In fact, there is nothing that makes you say ‘Niiiiiice’, either.

Ease of use: 5 stars. Wikia is as easy to use as a large, complicated website can be.  This is due to good design and to logical categorization. There is an easy to locate bar at the top of the page as well as large buttons allowing you to create your own wiki. It’s very easy to complete any task you set out to do here.

Functionality: 5 stars. There are buttons allowing users to interact with the website via Twitter, Facebook, and a blog. There also is a scrolling bar with some of the more timely Wikia topics, enticing visitors to browse and check out the site a little.

Content: 5 stars. Although wiki pages are notoriously filled with poor grammar and misinformation, the main pages of this website have been carefully edited. The blog is particularly well written and has posts from several different staff members. These posts link to Wikia pages, giving visitors yet another reason to browse a little longer.

Appropriateness: 4 stars. We would like to see a little more fun to go with the function. The serious color scheme and straightforward language makes the site easy to use, but it needs that extra pop of personality

Overall: 4.4 stars. Wikia is a well-designed site with only superficial flaws.
