Silly Poems for Even Sillier Kids Website

Parents want to give their children educational toys and books, but children prefer something a little more fun. Silly Poems for Even Sillier Kids seems like an excellent compromise. This soon to be released book features poems by and for children. Like most books, it is being promoted in a variety of ways including a website. But is the website up to the task?

Website Reviewed: sillypoems.info

At first, the site seems very well designed as well as appropriate for its genre. The color palette is primary with a little sophistication—the blue is deep and modern, and the other colors made brighter to provide contrast. Several different fonts are used to give a wacky feeling, but they are selected to work well together. There are a few fun and creative touches that give the website a professional feeling, such as stars that twinkle.

However, there are a few problems that keep Silly Poems for Even Sillier Kids from being all that it can be. Those navigation buttons on the right side? They don’t go anywhere. Ditto for the Contact Us link at the top of the page. This happened on both of the computers that we tried, although we used Internet Explorer both times. The rest of the site is well made—the children in our test panel loved the featured poem and wanted to hear more—but the overall feeling is that this site is unfinished or simply wasn’t made well. It’s a shame considering that the website is visually beautiful and shows the beginnings of a great child-oriented brand.

Creativity: 5 stars. From the drawings to the colors, this website is fun and child friendly, but serious enough that adults will want to buy the book. We particularly like the modern yet kid approved color scheme.

Ease of use: 4 stars. All of the features that work are easy to use—but several don’t work. There aren’t a lot of features, but the subject really doesn’t need any. Scrolling down the page is easy enough that a child can do it… which is good because that is the target audience.

Functionality: 2 stars. The links to nowhere and nonfunctional buttons are just not acceptable in a professionally designed website. Further, there are no links to an author’s website, social networking pages, or anywhere for interested readers to find out more. This website has the potential to build a following, but there is nowhere for interested people to go. This is a huge oversight, and one that we hope will be corrected.

Content: 5 stars. The content is well written and appeals to children while maintaining an adult friendly feeling. This is a difficult balance, but one that is handled well here.

Appropriateness: 5 stars. This website was designed with its purpose and its audience in mind. The colors and content are very kid friendly, as is the content. There is nothing inappropriate here.

Overall: 4.2 stars. We look forward to hearing more from Silly Poems for Silly Kids, and hope that these little snafus get cleared up.
