If you think about it, it is rather amusing that so many apps have their own website. After all, the whole point of smartphones is to replace traditional computers by offering the same tools in a small, handheld format. However, many of the app websites we have encountered are well-designed sales tools, and the Launch It site is a good example.
The Launch It app basically allows Mac users to create keyboard shortcuts to their favorite apps. The logo design is a cartoonish rocket taking off, a simple image that dominates the homepage. The rest of the homepage is inviting in much the same way as the logo. Sunny yellows, golds, and oranges dominate, and the basic function of the app is explained in large letters. It took us a minute to locate the small navigation bar, which is located at the lower right-hand side of the page. In low contrast light gray, this important feature is overwhelmed by the other elements and very easily missed.
No app is an island, so there are links to a blog and a contact page run by the app’s creators. If you are a fan, these features allow you to watch the company for their next apps. There are also easy instructions on the FAQs page for opening, installing, and running the app, which is a must for less proficient users but somehow overlooked by many developers.
App websites tend to be small because they are selling a single, easy to understand product. This one fits that description well. Overall, this website’s easygoing, straightforward nature makes the app appear even more attractive, which is important considering that this smartphone feature is supposed to simplify the user experience.
Creativity: 5 stars. We give this website full points for having a bright, friendly mood and also for making good use of negative space. The homepage is clean and bright, which will be inviting to potential buyers of this app.
Ease of use: 4 stars. This website is very easy to use, with a handy guide to actually installing and accessing the app’s features. However, it is difficult to find this important information due to its placement and lack of contrast.
Functionality: 5 stars. It is very easy to see at a glance what this app has to offer and whether you need it. In addition, there are links to the iPhone store, social networks, and a blog.
Content: 5 stars. The content on the website is rather sparse, but it really needs little explanation due to the use of graphics. The wording is easy to read and informal, making the app seem friendly and usable, but professional as well.
Appropriateness: 5 stars. This bright, cheerful website is very appropriate for an app that is intended to save time and increase productivity.
Overall: 4.8 out of 5 stars. There’s not a lot to this website, but that’s okay considering its genre. It is overall easy to use and highly understandable.
