Hungarian wines are somewhat underrated among modern enthusiasts, even the well-known Tokay. This is unfortunate because brand is a huge part of the wine buying process. Many people will choose a bottle based not just upon its characteristics and rating, but on its perceived quality and visual elements. Even for Hungarian wine enthusiasts, it can be difficult to find a good selection simply because it is not the best-selling niche. However, people in the UK can turn to the Hungarian Wine Society to find the selection they need and also to meet some of the newcomers in this growing market.
Website Reviewed: hungarianwinesociety.co.uk
The Hungarian Wine Society website features as an e-commerce spot as well as an information hub. These two aspects are divided within the website and the navigation bar, with links offering information and news on the left of the logo and sales information on the right.
Hungary is known for its sweet wines, and this is represented well by giving sweet wines their own tab next to reds and whites. Wine lovers can also buy different selections of mixed cases if they want a sampler of the genre.
While we enjoy the way information and sales are separated and thus easy to divide mentally. However, this is one of our key criticisms as well. Much of the news and other information discusses different Hungarian wine brands, but does not link to them. This is basically giving up valuable sales.
There are many features to this site, however, that counteract any negative points. We especially like the way the sales page for each wine contains evaluations from critics as well as information about the name or region when appropriate. These little details make this site a good choice for Hungarian wine connoisseurs and those who are little newer to the region’s vintages.
Creativity: 4 stars. The website is not the most creative that we have seen, but it has ‘good bones’. In other words, it was created to have an intuitive structure and yet to allow for creativity on every page.
Ease of use: 4 stars. The way the navigation bar is divided makes this website very easy to use. If we had our choice, we would switch the sales and information sections, so that the sales info is the first thing people see when they load the landing page.
Functionality: 5 stars. There are a variety of ways to make a purchase or to become a longer term follower of this brand. You can subscribe to a newsletter, become a Facebook fan, or follow them on Twitter. Since branding is all about building a following, these functional aspects definitely make the website a better brand presence.
Content: 5 stars. We like the way the wines are described as well as the inclusion of critics’ statements. The wording is an important sales tool here.
Appropriateness: 5 stars. This site offers the perfect mixture of information and commercial content, all in an attractive way that is relevant to the subject.
Overall: 4.6 out of 5 stars.
