A concept artist tends to think outside of the box, so we had high expectations for the website of Edward Dark. Luckily, this website did not fail to disappoint; in fact, we were delighted with the overall picture as well as the tiny details that we found here.
When you land on the home page, you are pulled into the mood and aesthetic of the artist. Dark blues dominate, while a piece of the artist’s work at the left side of the page pulls you in. The artist’s name and logo design sit above three tabs as well as a long row of narrow tiles in dark colors. These tiles each open into one of the artist’s latest pieces of art when you click on them. The tabs also each open into a small window, allowing you to navigate the site without trouble.
Creativity: 5 stars. The dark beauty of this website directly echoes that of the artist’s work, which is shown throughout the website. Not only is the look creative, but the way the site is organized is also creative as well. Arranging information in tiles allows users to choose what they want to see and access it in a fast and easy way. People who are interested in the artist’s technique can refer to a magazine article featured on the site that showcased this technique.
Ease of use: 5 stars. The way the tiles and tabs open into a window within a window is original and very easy to use. When you close the window, you are back exactly where you began. This mixture of creativity and function keeps an original idea from feeling contrived or over-designed.
Functionality: 5 stars. You can find everything you need to know about Edward Dark in this simple, easy to navigate website. A small button on the front page leads you to the artist’s Twitter site, while a contact button takes you to an email address. The Information tab also gives the artist’s latest media mentions and a list of his specialties.
Content: 4 stars. There is very little content—while many people become verbose in their websites, this artist seems to have the precise opposite instinct. A little more content would be nice, such as elaboration of upcoming products and an explanation of techniques. Concept art tends to be less straightforward than traditional art, making it necessary for the artist to guide us through their work.
Appropriateness: 5 stars. This website is completely and totally appropriate to the artist and his work. You cannot look around for even a brief amount of time without getting a good grasp of Edward Dark’s personal style. Artistic websites have much fewer restrictions, but few are as interesting and well constructed as this one.
Overall: 4.8 stars. This website is relevant to its genre and relevant to the artist who it represents. From the colors to the way the site is designed, there is much to appreciate here and very little to find fault with.
