Church Website Design Review

By Eva Alsis

We don’t usually cover church websites, but perhaps this is due to the fact that so few of them are good enough to be counted among the best. Unfortunately, many churches and other religious entities are failing to use modern marketing techniques despite their obvious usefulness. However, we recently came upon the CSS web design for Victory Church in Troy, PA. This relatively small church has a website that will be attractive to visitors and informative for members, all in an easy to navigate and attractive package.

This church has a lot going on—children’s ministries, youth ministries, various religious services as well as outreach and even an on-site café. The website represents these many pursuits well. The deep blue is relaxing and also creates a trustworthy feeling. The floral background adds detail without being distracting. Every ministry has its own page and its own blurb.

However, the Victory Church website may be a little too well organized and even, well, sterile. For example, many of the pictures in the photo gallery could be used to add interest in the rest of the website instead of the stock photography that dominates the rest of the website. In addition, many of the site’s visitors are likely looking for basic information, such as service times and driving directions, yet these are buried so deep in the site that it takes a few minutes to find them.

All criticism aside, this is a vibrant website that shows the church to its best advantage. It is easy to see the wide array of ministries being offered as well as the general flavor of the pastor and his congregation. There are a few shortcomings, but almost all websites have these. In all, it’s a decent site.

Creativity: 3 stars. Creativity is perhaps the one area lacking the most in this website. The deep blue color and vaguely floral pattern is not the most creative, nor is the use of stock photography when there are useable photos already on the website. However, the website is smooth and seamlessly put together despite a slightly bland feeling.

Ease of use: 4 stars. Overall, good organization reigns. However, there are some important pieces of information that are difficult to find—almost impossible at that. Hopefully feedback from members will help this church modify its structure—which is for the most part solid.

Functionality: 2 stars. We looked hard for social networking pages, blogs, and other outside supplements to this website, but were unable to find any. The website is very informative on its own, but these elements would certainly be helpful.

Content: 5 stars. The content is well-written and shows not just facts about the church, but the type of tone you can expect there.

Appropriateness: 5 stars. This website is very appropriate not just for any church, but for this church in particular. It is easy to figure out what to expect here, which will give people a good idea of whether they should attend.

Overall: 3.8 out of 5 stars
