If we’ve said it once, we’ve set it a thousand times: people in the fields of art and design absolutely must have top-notch websites. The Jason Benjamin website is a visually beautiful, intuitively designed CSS website that gives a well-rounded view of the artist’s personal style and body of work.
The landing page is cool and black with a slideshow of Jason Benjamin’s most recent work. The simple, dark background allows the colors in the artwork to really pop. When you click on ‘More Information’—the only link—information about the artist as well as places where his art can be purchased appear below the artwork. This allows the artist’s portfolio to take center stage.

This is a very simple website, but it includes all of the necessary information. We enjoy that there are no unneeded frills. However, it is missing a few crucial elements. While the site is beautiful, the fonts used are very plain. Choosing something less basic for the artist’s name and headers would contribute to the sense of style without adding clutter. If the artist himself designed the font or chose one congruent with his sensibilities, it would only build the brand.
Further, while there are links to galleries that feature Mr. Benjamin’s work, there is no blog, social network, or other brand-building links. While CSS design allows a website to be search engine optimized without a lot of visible text, a blog would likely drive more traffic to the site while allowing people to get a sense of the artist behind the artwork. Even artists need to aggressively market and brand themselves.
Another critique: the ‘About Jason’ section includes mentions of past and upcoming shows. This would be better organized in a resume format. In addition, an upcoming tour is mentioned but no dates or locations given. These should be added as soon as the details are worked. The lack of links and dated information give the website a somewhat disconnected feeling. However, there is no denying that this is a beautiful example of CSS design.
Creativity: 4 stars. This website is built around the artwork it represents and thus has a very creative feeling. However, it could benefit from more creative font usage. The black and white colors were well-chosen.
Ease of use: 5 stars. It doesn’t get any easier than this! One click and you’re there. The small amount of information makes it easy to access.
Functionality: 2 stars. This is the one area where the website could really improve. A simple blog, a Facebook link, and a few tour details would make this website top-notch and likely improve Jason Alexander’s sales. They would also drive more traffic to the website, increasing awareness of this artist and building his personal brand.
Content: 5 stars. The text is sparse but simple and informative.
Appropriateness: 5 stars. The CSS design allows this website to literally revolve around the artwork. This makes it a great branding and marketing tool.
Overall: 4.2 out of 5 stars.
